Many people will say that hobbies and past times are ‘good for you.” However, an international study in 2021 sought to validate if this was true, specifically looking at crochet.
There were 8,391 respondents involved in the study across several countries. Nearly all of those involved identified as women, who were between the ages of 41 and 60, and who had been crocheting between 1-5 years.
An analytical reader (such as myself) might say that the sample, while of a decent size, only comprises a certain age group and gender. One might also question the cultural representation, which is not mentioned.
However, one thing is clear – their moods were significantly improved by the act of crochet.
The next question one might ask is whether crochet is accessible. A very fair question. Crochet is relatively low cost with a kit costing as low as $5, yarn being very affordable when purchased in bulk, and it’s portable and easily started and stopped mid-work.
As a woman proudly in my 40’s with two children at home and a busy house, I can confidently say that this art form has not only brought me joy, but has also brought my children joy and has deeply touched Med(ication) Snugglers customers who feel seen.
So, what are you waiting for? Volunteer to crochet a few Med Snugglers with your friends, coworkers, or on your own time.
Craft kinder communities for youth experiencing mental health crisis, while healing your own mind too.
C’mon, get happy.
